News from the Green Economics Institute -June 2019
We have been incredibly busy this month, we have just attended the Bonn, United Nations climate summit, SB50 where we had an official side event and one of the most official prominent exhibition stands, as well as talking to many of the party country negotiators and focal points.
We are very pleased that we had Dorothy Nalebega from our Team in Uganda representing us as a speaker at our official United Nations Side Event this week.

We also are attending a 1000 person strong gathering of economists and having an exhibition stand in France and we attended a gathering of green institutes and foundations this week in Brussels in a most interesting place called Transforma x for innovation hubs.
We also have been discussing the real changes in various countries who are implementing green economy programmes as well as the effect of the heatwaves and climate change which is now really upon us, in the form of wildfires, the chancellor of Germany visibly shaking in the heat, the Siberian tundra permafrost melting and growing vegetation, and the polar ice caps really melting fast.

Drought is also afflicting many countries including a crisis in India and an unprecedented Canicule or heatwave the like of which has never covered the whole of mainland Europe before with many countries breaking all time records yesterday with France recording 45 degrees in the south.
African countries at Bonn were telling me that the effects are all too visible now and the heat in the 50 degrees is unbearable. The Stern review argued that only the Scandinavian countries and the poles would be inhabitable in the future- looks like this might be correct but only it is likely to happen much faster than predicted. Species are being wiped out very fast.
People are on the move in the largest ever mass migration as farmers cant cope and they move into towns and cities which also cant cope. Water is on the move all over Africa with new dams coming in stream and generally the climate is on target for between 3-5 degrees of warming if we dont get a grip very soon.
James Lovelock is discussing in the New Scientist how the earth is too near the sun without life to keep the temperature down and would naturally over heat. He describes the coming Novacene which is characterised by automation, we being the species on which it depends and predates.
I would like to think that instead of the anthropocene we give way to a biocene of the natural world, rather than a bionicene which some people are expecting but one alternative which no one has yet mentioned is a gynycene -a world run by women and I think that might be very very different from the one currently screwing everything up- we ought to give it a try!
